Monday saw the first half of our August Bank Holiday two day meeting with
Our first race (2.25pm) was the ‘The Racing Again Tomorrow Selling Stakes’ , the class 6 contest over 6f saw the clear favourite ‘Ena Sharples’ beat Mick Channon trained ‘Sojoum’. The winning combination of Trainer David Nicholls and son Adrian Nicholls. The winner was then auctioned and sold for 9,500 gns.
Our second race (3.00pm) was the ‘The Billy Nevett Memorial Handicap Stakes’; the race in memory of the jockey, most remembered for winning the 1945 Derby on ‘Dante’. This year commemerates the 20th anniversay of Billy’s passing and Peter Nevett, Billy’s son was on hand as ever to present the glorious trophy to the winning connections. The race was won by Richard Whittaker trained ‘Love Island’ under Paul Quinn, beating Paul Green trained ‘Rusty Rocket’ by 1 1/4 lengths.
Our third race (3.35pm) saw the return of ‘The Ripon Rowels Handicap Stakes’ a Class 2 contest over a mile. The race was won by ‘Osteopathic Remedy’ who won the same race back in 2010, the 8yo trained by Michael Dods and riden by P.J McDonald faced late pressure from David Nicholls trained ‘St Moritz’ but the winner ended up 1 1/4f clear with David O’Mearas favourite ‘Toto Skyllachy’ only managing third place.
Our feature & fourth race of the day(4.10pm) a class 1 listed race for 2yo over 6f saw the return of Ann Duffield’s ‘Melody of Love’ who showed promise on debut here at Ripon before landing a C&D madiden ealier in the month. The competitive race was taken by Tom Dascombe’s ‘Deaville Prince’, the close contest saw the Duffield horse come back fighting only to be 1 1/4 lengths behind the eventual winner. William Haggas’s ‘Botantic Garden’ who has recently joined the yard could only finish 3rd despite holding a 6f group 2 entry.
Our fifth race (4.45pm) ‘The SIS Live Maiden Stakes ‘ a 5class 4 contest over 1 mile for 3& 4yo saw Mark Johnstons yard show his recent Goodwood form. Star Lahib finished a clear 6 lengths ahead of ‘Kept’ trained and brought up by Newmarket’s James Fanshawe under Richard Kingscote wh was looking for a quick fire double. They finished a further 3 3/4 lengths ahead of Brian Ellisons ‘Quiet Route’ the 4/1 f who couldnt keep up with the leading pack of two.
The race was delayed by approxamatly 45 minutes due to an incident before the race which resulted in ‘Brenkley Melani’s jockey Eva Moscrop being airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Eva was thankfully released from the LGI that night and is recovering from a few bumps and brusies at home.
Our sixth race & final race of the day (scheduled for 5.20pm) was the ‘The totepool A BETTER WAY TO BET HANDICAP STAKES’ a class 5 contest for 3yo over 1m1f. The final race of the day which went off at a delayed time was taken by Ed Dunlop trained ‘Narcissist’ owned by the Honorable Earle I. Mack. Beating James Fanshawe’s ‘Exning Halt’ into second place for a second race in a row by 1 1/2 lengths. Richard Whittaker’s ‘Miss Ella Jade’ took third place.
