Last Thursday saw our gates open for the 2013 season! We were pretty lucky with the dry weather, despite the ferocious wind the day was a great success with eight races which remarkably delivered nine winners!!
The day was a big day with the launch of the NEW ‘Theakstons Terrace Bar’ and the refurbished ‘Jim Joel Bar’ , the meeting also saw the introduction of our on course fixed betting operators RiponBET.
Race One – 2.10 pm – The E.B.F. Eat Sleep & Drink at Nags Head Pickhill Maiden Stakes ( Class 5 )
The opening race of the season saw 12 horses compete over 5f for 2yr old maidens, the contest was won by Preston based trainer Eric Alston’s Blithe Spirit with Ann Duffield’s Muspelheim & Tim Easterby’s Ventura Mist both close behind on their debuts.
Winning margins – 2 1/2 l, 3/4 l & 1/2 l – Time 1 min 0.78 seconds.
Race Two – 2.45 pm – The Get Set With RiponBET Conditions Stakes ( Class 3 )
The second race of the day was a Clas 3 condtions stakes for 4yo+ over 1m1f. The race saw two non-runners turn a field of 7 into a field of 5, Brian Meehan’s Burano went in as the favourite but the race was clinched by David Nicholls trained St Moritz with Adrian Nicholls on board. The thrilling race saw the Nichollls team take the race by a NK.

Race Three – 3.20 pm – The PPR Foundation Handicap Stakes ( Class 4 ) ( Div I )
The first division of the PPR Foundation Handicap was yet another thrilling race to add, with the field of 12 runners looking like a very competative race. The race finished in a close contest between Richard Fahey’s Baldemar & Richard Guest’s Johnny Cavagin, with Brian Ellisons Sans Loi also coming into the frame. Johnny Cavagin took the spoils for owner and breeder Mr A.Bell.

Race Four – 3.55pm The Ripon ‘Cock O’ The North’ Handicap Stakes ( Class 3 )
The return of the well known ‘Ripon Cock’ O The North’ saw took the main stage as the days feature race, with Charlie Hills trained Country Weston go in as RP favourite. Mick Channon & Mrs. K Burke’s runners Lightening Launch & London Citizen contested but could

Race Five – 4.30pm – The PPR Foundation ( Class 4 ) ( DIV I I )
The second division of the PPR Foundation handicap was easily the most thrilling race of the day. With Sir Robert Ogden’s Baccarat & David O’ Meara trained Sandy Lane finishing in a dead heat. The contest over 6f saw the two horses finish 6l clear of the rest of the field in a gripping finish which also clearly had the crowd divided.
Winning margins – DH, 6l & 1 1/4l – Time 1 min 14.30 seconds.
Race Six – 5.05pm – The Hopton Brow Handicap Stakes ( Class 5 )
With Richard Fahey off the mark with the previous race he was loooking to strike again with progressive Right Touch. The 6f contest for 3yo+ saw another gripping finish which saw the Fahey trained Right Touch clinch the race by a NK over Richard Whitaker trainer Tumble wind, a regular in the winners enclosure here at Ripon.

Race Seven – 5.35pm – The SIS Live Maiden Stakes ( Class 5 )
The 7th race on the card saw Richard Fahey complete a treble on the opening day of the season. Brookes Bounty with Tony Hamilton on board shook off the Kevin Ryan trained Tinctoria with Alan Swinbank’s Samoset a close third. Completing a double for jockey and trainer also on the day.
Winning margins – 2l, 3/4l & 1l – Time 1 min 47.76 seconds.
Race Eight – 6.05pm – The Malosa Medical Apprentice Handicap Stakes ( Class 4 )
The final race of the day day saw our top trainer in 2012 Tim Easterby bag his first winner of the season here at Ripon. Gary Mahon was on board Another Citizen to take the race by a short head. Only Gary’s second winner, both on the Middleham Park owned Another Citizen.
