April 2015, Carl Tonks, the Head Groundsman at Ripon Racecourse, was diagnosed with a rare form of bone marrow cancer known as Myeloma. The Racecourse Team has rallied around Carl to offer all the support he requires to continue tending the ground during his treatment, thus remaining an integral part of the team in staging racing throughout the summer at the Garden Racecourse.
Furthermore, Ripon Racecourse has begun a campaign to raise funds and awareness for Myeloma UK, the only organisation within Great Britain focused solely on research and development regarding Myeloma treatment. The Racecourse effort will focus around the Leeds 5KBig Fun Run at Roundhay Park on Saturday 22 August. The Team are running and fundraising as ‘Team Ripon’,so please donate to the team cause to help reach their target of £1000!Donations can be as little or as much as you wish, and all will be gratefully received for what is a hugely worthwhile cause. James Hutchinson, Managing Director of Ripon Racecourse, commented “As Head Groundsman, Carl is an important part of our team here at Ripon. When he was diagnosed, as his colleagues we felt we should play our part and with his encouragement he is determined for us to help others. As there is no current cure for Myeloma we wanted to do something to help raise awareness and funds towards research for a cure. We hope you can help us along the way by donating what you can for this great cause”
