Tuesday saw the second day of our August Bank Holiday two day meeting. The day was very much a day of doubles with winning doubles for Graham Lee & trainer and jockey combination Silvestre De Sousa & Mel Brittain.
Our first race (2.00pm) was ‘The Ripon-races.co.uk Selling Stakes’ , the class 6 contest over 1m1f saw a predicted field of 14 reduced to 10 due the change in ground with Monday’s heavy rain. The contest was very much a battle between Brian Ellison’s ‘Future Wonder’ & Richard Whittaker’s ‘ Spin A Wish’, the race was very much taken in the final furlong by ‘Future Wonder’ who ended the race 3 1/4 lengths clear. The winner was then auctioned and sold for 3,200 gns.
Our second race (2.30pm) was ‘The toteswinger Fillies’ Maiden Auction Stakes’ the 5f class 5 contest saw Mel Brittain trained ‘Balinka’ go off as the 5/6f, with some competitive fillies lining up with Scott Dixon & Tim Easterby both with two entries. Balinka confirmed his favourites status with a comfortable 2 length win over Scott Dixon’s ‘Pastureyes’.
Our third race at (3.05pm) ‘The SIS Live Nursery Handicap Stakes’ a Class 4 contest for 2yo over 6f. With two non-runners the field was reduced to 5 runners. With Tim Easterby’s ‘Rat Catcher’ winning here back in May the step up in class made punters look elsewhere in the betting. Ralph Beckett trained ‘Silver Ridge’ went off as 6/4f and the punters confidence was rewarded with a 1 1/3 length win over 15/2 shot’Rated’who is trained, bred and owned by Mick Channon.
Our fourth race of the day(3.40pm) saw the return of ‘The Sapper Conditions Stakes’ a class 3 5f race for 2yo. With Tim Easterby trained ‘Shrimper Roo’ not running due to soft ground, the race was a 4 horse race with David Simcock trained ‘ Stand of Glory’ who went out 4/6f. The race was very much a contest between the favourite and Richard Whitakers ‘Tumblewind’ , however James Given trained ‘Girl at the Sands’ came through to beat ‘Tumblewind’ by 1/2 length and a shoulder to the favourite.
Our fifth race (4.15m) ‘The City of Ripon Stakes ‘ a class 3 Handicap contest over 1 mile for 3& 4yo+. A highly competitive race with 4 late non runners saw only 10 take to the stalls. The race was a close call with Ed Dunlop’s ‘Voodoo Price’ & Mick Easterby’s ‘Barron Brook’ fighting it out for the Newmarket based trainer Dunlop taking the race a clear length. Barron Brook was followed by the short head of previous Ripon winner Fahey trained ‘Kay Gee Be’.
Heading to our sixth race (4.45pm), ‘The attheraces.com Handicap Stakes’ was taken by Tim Easterby, our current leading trainer under claiming jockey Adam Carter. ‘Hayek’ won by neck to Conor Dore trained ‘Satwa Laid’ with Geoffrey Harker’s ‘I Confess’ a near 1/2 length behind.
Our seventh and final race of the day (5.15pm) ‘The Wakeman Stayers Handicap Stakes’ a 2 mile race for 3yo + saw Mel Britain & Silvestre De Sousa claim a jockey and trainer double with ‘Generous Dream’. Beating Chris Fairhurst’s ‘Spuzzo’. The
